Library History
Established in 1967 with the founding of Urdaneta City University (formerly City Colleges of Urdaneta), the university library began as a humble institution, rooted in a heartfelt commitment to offering accessible, high-quality education. Inspired by a belief in the power of community, the library was lovingly built through the generosity and cooperation of local educators, civic organisations, and community members, whose gifts books, learning materials, and time touched the lives of countless students, especially those from marginalised and working sectors of society.
The first library found its home in a modest room within the PACD Building, where Dr Pedro T. Orata also kept his office. Despite the limited space and resources, the library became a cherished haven for learning, research, and academic support. As student enrollment grew, the university responded with compassion, expanding the library into a classroom loaned by Urdaneta National High School providing a welcoming space that encouraged students’ dreams and fostered a sense of belonging.
The development of the library was further strengthened by the unwavering dedication of Mrs Gloria Salinas, its first librarian, who served in an acting capacity while also teaching. Her heartfelt commitment sparkled as she laid the foundation for continuous improvement in library services and operations, inspiring all who sought knowledge within its walls.
Over the years, the library blossomed, expanding its collections, facilities, and services to keep pace with the university’s thriving community and educational advances. In 1990, it was renamed the Learning Resource Centre, reflecting its embrace of instruction, research, and independent learning through books, periodicals, and multimedia resources. Then, in 2008, the library moved to the Pedro T. Orata Building and was officially named the Pedro T. Orata Library, marking a proud milestone that created an inspiring environment for study and academic engagement.
For decades, the library has grown beyond just being a repository of books; it has evolved into a vibrant, nurturing centre for learning, research, information access, and intellectual development, always driven by a deep sense of purpose. Through its services, collections, and programs, the library steadfastly guides students, faculty, and researchers, nurturing their journey toward knowledge, critical thinking, and lifelong growth.
Today, the library of Urdaneta City University proudly preserves its heritage while adapting to the evolving demands of modern education and technology. Looking ahead, the library is determined to provide quality resources and academic support, empowering students to be globally competitive, socially responsible, and lifelong learners.
